A common misconception is that when you start your business, you need to immediately design yourself one logo and then call it a day and move onto the next item on your checklist.
And while the DIY route can be useful in the early stages of your business when you don’t have much capital, not delving into a full brand strategy can harm your business.
I always suggest a full logo suite and custom touches to make your brand stand out from the competition.
Here’s why:
Having one logo limits you
You will eventually need to create graphics for your business and while right now it may only be social media posts, you will likely want PDF guides, printables and packaging design later on in your business. When you only have one logo to pull from, it can make creating very hard. It will force you to rely on Canva templates and spending precious time on scrolling through to find the perfect templates for you. When you have a full brand identity in place, you will create content quickly and with ease.
It inhibits your client’s experience
When you only have one logo to create with, it limits your creative freedoms and your ability to create a memorable experience for your audience. Think about the client journey. Someone finds you on social media likely. They go to your website and download a free resource. They get onto your email list and become a client eventually. You send them onboarding and welcome documents. They work with you and you send them wrap up gifts and deliverables. They come back a year later for another offer or they continue their relationship with you. All of those touch points above create room for you to ensure a uniquely crafted experience for your client which is WAY easier to do when you have a full logo suite, brand patterns, brand illustrations and more.
Here’s what I suggest having in your brand suite:
- Logo suite that includes primary, secondary, submark and additional logos (tagline logos, signature logos, more submark variations)
- Branded patterns and textures that are unique to you and gives you the ability to make business cards, website backgrounds and beautifully crafted marketing collateral for your clients and audience
- Illustrations and Icons that allow you to have some fun with your brand and create a very unique experience for your clients that shows you care
- Color palette that’s consistent and doesn’t change every 6 months
- Font suite or typography as it’s officially known that is also consistent and doesn’t change when you find a cute new Canva template
